Writing Tips While you may be able to incorporate similar material from one essay to the next, be careful with your formatting and proofreading if you do any copy/pasting. A good way to tie this into your essay is to focus on your school’s motto. The essay is one of the few things that you’ve got complete control over in the application process, especially by the time you’re in your senior year. Sometimes, parents are tempted to “help” with the essay. It is fine to help in the ways I suggested above â€" with brainstorming or breaking down the tasks. When Warren was asked about haphazard mistakes students make, he recounted one college essay example. As time consuming as it can be to write several essays, you must address each prompt properly. Remember, also, to accent the positive rather than the negative side of an experience. If you write about the effect of a death, divorce, or illness on your life, tell about but don't dwell on your bad luck and disappointments. Why is it important to you that your professors are personable and care about you and your future? Or that your school has a focus on community and diversity? Picking a college is one of the biggest commitments that you’ll make in your life, and it’s important that the one you pick aligns with who you are and what you believe. College admission essays can both be a fun and stressful part of the admission process at any university. Beware of the chronological list of events that produces dull reading. Do write as many drafts of your essay as it takes to make it shine brightly. Don’t wait until the last minute to start writing. Don’t be overly influenced by others’ ideas or essays other people have written. Don’t let anyone else write any part of your essay. They need to think about those snapshots that have defined them. Another way to think about an essay topic is to think about those small moments that might even seem mundane on the surface, but that have had a big impact on their life. Describe a moment where it may seem that nothing exciting was happening to an outside observer, but that meant a great deal to the student. The idea behind the essay is for colleges to be able to learn something about the student that they couldn’t have learned through the rest of the application. Many students have volunteered in various ways, even in other countries. Sometimes students neglect to copy over their entire essay into an application and only submit a portion of their work. But, please, don’t think that you can write an essay that will sound like your teen. I assure you that every admissions department in the country can detect when an essay is written by a parent. I encourage kids to think about writing their essay as though they’re describing a snapshot in time.
